February Program Themes
February brings a new array of creative activities and imaginative learning experiences for children. Below is a sampling of activities that your child may experience in the month of February.
For infants, the theme is “What’s that Smell?” Sample activities include:
- Library & Literacy: Featured Books: I'm a Little Teapot and It's Raining, It's Pouring by Iza Trapani
- Language Development: Vocabulary words that describe vehicles and motion
- Science & Sensory: Exploring a variety of scents
For Toddlers, the theme is “Food.” Sample activities include:
- Library & Literacy: Books and photos of food items and mealtime routines; Featured Books: Over in the Meadow and Ten Little Monkeys by Child’s Play
- Creative Arts: Puff paint in squeeze bottles, cardboard, and colorful paper
- Science & Sensory: Scented play dough to manipulate
- Dramatic Play: Food and restaurant props to role-play mealtimes
For Discovery Preschool, the theme is “In My Imagination.” Sample activities include:
- Library & Literacy: Decorating and writing in booklets; Featured Books: Green as a Bean by Karla Kuskin and Winter by Gerda Muller
- Creative Arts: Exploring the effects of chalk and water on various colors of paper
- Science & Sensory: Exploring ice cubes and cotton balls
- Dramatic Play: Pretending to be characters on stage
- Math & Manipulatives: Exploring number concepts through matching and sorting
For Preschool, the theme is “In the Winter.” Sample activities include:
- Library & Literacy: Writing on mitten-shaped paper; Photographs and books featuring winter; Featured Book: The Mitten by Jan Brett
- Creative Arts: Making winter-themed collages
- Science & Sensory: Setting up a weather station
- Dramatic Play: Dramatizing the story of The Mitten
- Math & Manipulatives: Mitten matching games
For Prekindergarten, the theme is “In the Winter.” Sample activities include:
- Library & Literacy: Journal writing; Playing phonics games; Letter V collages; Featured Book: The Mitten by Jan Brett
- Creative Exploration: Making frost and ice-cube paintings
- Science and Sensory: Making bird feeders; Exploration of snow
- Math & Manipulatives: Calculating ice-melting rates
